PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD: El Coyote's management, MARJORIE CHRISTOFFERSEN, contributed to the "Yes on 8" campaign which SUPPORTS the ban of marriage equality in the state of California.
We should put our money where our mouth AND support is AND NOT AT EL COYOTE.
You can send her your thoughts, feelings and comments at: elcoyotecafe@hotmail.com
Edited to add:
An anonymous tipster gave me a link to this website. Marjorie is clearly more that just management.
and
More boycotting here
Edited to add (Nov. 12th):
I received this email from Gary R. Cohan, M.D., F.A.C.P. and he gave me permission to print it here on the blog -
To all who believe that the "Boycott of El Coyote" by the LGBT community is wrong, please remember the facts and some history:
1. Margorie Christofferson is an OWNER of this fabled establishment who consciously and willingly gave funds to a cause whose stated intention was "to eliminate the rights of same-sex people to marry and, in doing so, deny civil rights to some of her most loyal patrons, Ms. Christofferson was essentially saying "I"m happy to take your money, but screw you when it comes to being my moral and legal equivalent as a citizen of the United States."
2. She (wrongly) assumed that her personal contribution to "Yes on 8" would NEVER see the light of day.
3. In 1955, African-Americans shrewdly utilized their financial power to stage the famous "Montgomery Bus Boycott" which led to a United States Supreme Court decision that declared the laws requiring segregated buses unconstitutional.
4. Ms. Christofferson's predicatble reaction to the organized boycott is pathetic, unacceptable and typical of an outed bigot who stands to lose tens of thousands of dollars (and potentially her business) because of their personal actions. "I have lots of gay friends." "I never meant to hurt you." "The Church made me do it."
5. May we remind Ms. Christofferson of another time in history when people were held accountable for their personal behavior when attempting to excuse their unconscionable actions by saying that some higher order "made me do it." Specifically, the "Nuremberg Defense." This is a legal defense that essentially states that the defendant was "only following orders" and is therefore not responsible for his crimes.
- Nuremberg Principle IV states: "The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him."
Marjorie Christofferson had a moral choice. She chose wrong. Rest in peace, El Coyote. I'll miss the margaritas and the heartburn.

After digging a little further - Marjorie Christoffersen is a manager -- not an owner of El Coyote -- and she donated 100 dollars.
Being gay myself and fully believing that Prop 8 is ludicrous, I think that boycotting an establishment where one person is closed-minded and stupid (to the tune of 100 dollars) is misdirected anger and overkill.
El Coyote has always been very accepting of us homos - and rather than eliminating yet another place we can go and be gay... how bout putting your energy instead to boycotting the Mormon church, or other large establishment where blame can more appropriately be placed - and where some good can come of it.
Guy, If the manager donated to "Yes on 8", maybe she should look into managing another establishment - perhaps in Utah.
Don't boycott the place if you don't want to - at the very least you could write Marjorie a letter through the email address I put up in this post.
In regards to the Mormons, they aren't the only ones putting money and energy into "Yes on 8". While I was handing out flyers on election day reminding people to vote NO on 8, I was met by "Yes on 8" supporters. They were all from "In His Presence" church in Woodland Hills. Although they claimed to be Christian I wouldn't describe their behavior as very Christian-like.
Care to march with me in Woodland Hills this weekend?
Their ketchup-laden salsa alone is enough to boycott the place. But now I have a righteous reason, too! Thanks for being Fightin' Mad, Mary!
I'd definitely give her a piece of my mind via email - sure. But again we're talking 100 dollars from a manager (not on behalf of the restaurant - she just happens to work there) vs. 15 million plus from funds donated to inspired by the mormon church.
For more info on how to put your energy into hitting THEM where it hurts, see this URL:
Bad Mormon Church
I've done the weho walk, and will probably be protesting at the big Mormon church closer to my area. But thanks for the invite - and for being reasonable and understanding about my points!
I also hear what Guy is saying, but a donation is a donation and Marjorie did not have to state that she was part of El Coyote.
As I stated on my blog as well, Marjorie donates large amounts of money to the Republican Party (none of which were tagged with the EL Coyote name, fyi) and I think it's great that you don't think $100 is that much, but it was $100 towards accomplishing her/their goal of banning marriage equality.
The fact that an individual from one minority group would vote AGAINST rights for another minority group and then flaunt that stance by making a donation IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE NAME OF THE RESTAURANT THAT SHE RUNS which thousands of homosexuals, who are fighting for equal rights, have been patronizing for years.
HAD been patronizing for years.
Shame on her for being prejudice and shame on her for donating "only a $100" to a cause against the very patrons that help to keep her and her family in business.
atta girl mary.
you preach it girl!
if i lived in cali and i ate there? i would so be over that joint...over it.
I agree with Jeff. Aside from an owner apparently being homophobic, El Coyote's food is terrible. If you want old school greasy Mexican-American food, El Cholo is much better. The warm salsa is especially horrible.
It seems that Marjorie is not only a manager but the daughter of the owners and 1/3rd OWNER herself.
I have gone to El Coyote every Sunday for as long as I can remember but I will not be going back until they issue a public apology and donate a HUGE amount to Repeal Prop 8!
Really sorry, and surprised, to hear that Prop 8 passed there. Also sorry to hear a lot of the money came from Idaho Mormons. I was hoping they would contain their crap to our state at least. Guess not. Now you have a taste of what we put up with daily.
Theres a gossip/rumor going around here in Oz that good ol Courtney Love (who was a proud supporter of gay marriages and was there for the Prop 8) actually misread the ballot and VOTED INCORRECTLY on PROP 8 and then blogged about it.
Truth? Anyone know for sure?
As far as El Coyote goes, the Manager, who may or may not have contributed on behalf of the restaurant, did somehow make it known that she was connected to the establishment, right? Well, shame on her and shame on them.
I would boycott if I could... but i will def tell anyone I know in Cali to NOT venture there.
Please spread the word on a new website I put up to detail all mormon run businesses and boycott them.
www.boycottmormombusiness.com
I could also use some help with it if anyone wants to.
notohate@boycottmormonbusiness.com
ugh! TOAST too. of all places. that place is so gay and the owner donated. The nasty ass Hyatt I could understand but Toast?!
the simplest way to clean this up without damaging the employee’s and El Coyote is for Marjorie Chrisofferson to sell her ownership position out to her other partners and then for El Coyote to verify that this woman or any of her holding companies are no longer affiliated with El Coyote. If I was a limited partner is this right now I would be demanding a board meeting to get her ass out and buy her position out and save my investment before its toast. If she really cares about El Coyote and its employees and her fellow investors she sell out.
